The Knoxville faith community is mourning the loss of Pastor Scott Cagle, the beloved founding and senior pastor of Northstar Church, who has passed away.
Pastor Scott’s journey with Northstar began with a simple yet profound vision in early 2003 — to create a church rooted in prayer, community, and the message of Jesus Christ. Alongside a small group of devoted believers, he began meeting regularly to seek God’s heart and direction. On July 20, 2003, around 90 people gathered in a backyard on Westland Drive, where they felt the Lord’s calling to plant a new church in Knoxville — and Northstar Church was born.
Just a week later, the first official service was held at the CAK Middle School gym, drawing over 300 people — a clear sign that Pastor Scott’s faith-led vision had already begun to touch lives.
For more than two decades, Pastor Scott led Northstar Church with grace, humility, and unwavering devotion. His sermons inspired countless people to strengthen their relationship with God and to live a life of service, compassion, and love. He was not only a pastor but a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light for many who walked through Northstar’s doors.
On August 4, 2024, Pastor Scott officially passed the leadership baton to Pastor Cory Haney, ensuring that Northstar’s mission — to reach the city and the world with the good news of Jesus — would continue. Even after stepping down, his influence and legacy remained deeply woven into the heart of the church.
Tributes have poured in from across Knoxville and beyond.
Amy Matthews reflected, “Scott Cagle taught me so much about the Bible, about living for Jesus, and about truly knowing Him. Through Scott’s example, I learned what it means to love others for Him. My family is forever grateful for the ministry of Scott Cagle and Northstar Church.”
Doug Pinkston shared, “So sad. Scott was a great man. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Jim McClain, a former coach, remembered him fondly: “He played wide receiver for me at Doyle High School. His mother Millie and dad Martin were close friends. Our deepest condolences to all.”
Pastor Tim Munsey added, “Please pray for the family and congregation of Northstar Church. I learned a lot from Pastor Scott — we shared a love of good coffee and Jesus.”
Spencer Barnard summed up what many felt: “Few people have had a more impact on my life and ministry than Scott Cagle. I am what I am today because of him. Love you, Pastor Scott — see you again someday.”
Pastor Scott’s faith, leadership, and love for people leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations. His life embodied the verse that now echoes through his congregation’s hearts:
“Well done, my good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
Northstar Church and the entire Knoxville community give thanks for the life and ministry of Pastor Scott Cagle, whose dedication to sharing the gospel transformed countless lives.
Funeral arrangements and memorial details will be announced by Northstar Church in the coming days.
